Me and my family, we decided to spend our holidays somewhere near the water. Since we have three small children (the youngest is only one year old), the thermal spas in Hungary came to us as an ideal choice. Not so far as the sea and in addition we had the opportunity to stay in a beautiful hotel by registering to TVI Express. We bought a reservation voucher via traveler portal then we selected three star Aparthotel Heviz in the picturesque spa town of Hévíz and then we just surfed the internet looking up information about what is where to be seen. Approximately one month before departure I contacted the hotel if they know about us. Reception is at the nearby Hotel Kalma and staff confirmed that the reservation is in order. They wrote to me directly our room number and that we will pay only the hotel tax 420 HUF / day per person (children do not pay it), in case of the arrival of more people than the voucher includes, you can still pre-order an extra bed for 5000 HUF / night (approx. 22 EUR), cot is free of charge.
We arrived to Hévíz in the evening on 20th August. It was the day of St. Stephen and the city was full of people. Aparthotel Heviz is situated in the heart of town, so all the concerts and stands with food and wine were very close to us. The street festivities were taking place the entire next day until the following night. We were very pleasantly surprised by the hotel, the room was very nice and the kitchen was, despite of our expectations (in the hotel description was "partial kitchen"), fully equipped (except oven). Moreover we could visit sauna and whirlpool in the Kalma hotel for free. Actually we went there only once because the weather was so beautiful that we spent most of the time in the thermal lake or we went to the nearby lake Balaton in Keszthely.
The thermal lake in Hévíz is the largest one in Europe and you can enjoy it through whole the year, either outside or inside. During the day you can see people walking the streets with air mattresses and set off to the lake to do something for their health. You can choose from different types of single tickets and passes in combination with massage or without. We bought the ticket for 10 hours 6500 HUF / person (approx. 28 EUR) because we wanted to spend some days at the lake Balaton. There are two pools for children with plain water right next to the thermal lake and the water is also very warm. Due to hygienic reasons the larger pool was accessible only for children and the smaller one also for adults wading with children. Hévíz is really beautiful. There is plenty of cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. We also discovered that they give a large portions of ice cream which is absolutely delicious. In addition to small shops, there is also a supermarket.
Only 6 km from Heviz is a city called Keszthely - cultural town full of museums. You can find here a castle Festetic with the world famous library Helikon. The swimming in the lake Balaton by Keszthely is particularly suitable for families with children because there is a shallow water (on the southern shore of the lake as well). Our boys really enjoyed swimming. The water was very warm, so they spent time in the lake, in the Balaton-shaped pool or they were riding the slides and toboggans. In Keszthely you can also see anchored ships which attract tourists to different sightseeing cruises on the Lake Balaton. We chose the 1.5hour cruise during the sunset on a replica of the historic ship Hableány (Mermaid). Welcome drink was a part of the cruise - sparkling wine for adults and juice for children. Boat trip was all really great experience, so we highly recommed it to everyone.
Regarding the language,hungarian is so spicy that we have learned a few basic words and phrases, otherwise we spoke German or English. In the vicinity of the lake Balaton and Budapest is no problem to make yourself understood. The weather was nice, maybe too much. In late August, the temperature was high almost everywhere and there were no clouds on the sky. Balaton is one of the sunniest places in Europe. It is said that 90% of precipitation falls in March, April and November and in the summer rains very rarely.
Our entire family was very pleased with holidays In Hévíz and so we can recommend it also to others.
